When do you use corrective teaching? Use when something you’ve asked them not to do, or not doing something you’ve asked them to do. Also, doing something that could result in harm to self or others.
-
Stop the problem behavior
-
Give a consequence.
-
Describe the alternative/label the skill.
-
Rationale
-
Practice or role play.
-
Potential to earn half back.
Example:
1. Joe, stop throwing the book up against the wall.
2. Joe, because you did not follow my directions (skill) when I asked you to stop throwing the book you will receive a consequence. Your consequence for not following directions (skill) is you can only watch one hour of TV instead of two.
Or
3. The next time I ask you to follow a direction (skill), I need you to look at me, say okay, and follow my direction (skill).
4. It’s important for you to follow my directions (skill) because it shows me that you can listen and won’t get a consequence.
5. Okay, let’s practice. Joe, stop throwing the ball, okay.
6. Joe, because you practiced with me without arguing, you have earned back a half hour of TV. You may watch an hour and a half instead of one hour.
