partnership with basehor-linwood virtual school
Hope Academy is the educational component of House of Hope Kansas City. Our goal is to provide education in a safe, structured, and loving environment. All residents must attend school M-F and all effort will be made to maintain academic progress during their residence at House of Hope Kansas City. Instruction will be individualized in order to meet the unique needs of each student. Emphasis will be placed on personal goals and individual achievement rather than competition between students. We believe that school is also a place to learn and practice respect, personal management skills and values. Therefore, students will be expected to follow rules and guidelines as directed by the Principal and teachers. There will be clear and consistent consequences for misconduct which will be determined by the Principal, the counselor and the Director, and will follow the guidelines of House of Hope Kansas City.
Core subjects will primarily be taught through a computerized curriculum through Basehor-Linwood Virtual School. However, elective subjects, personal living skills, and PE will involve group participation. Every effort will be made to acquire previous academic records in order to plan their course of study. All students will also have an academic assessment before they begin their instruction at Hope Academy. Students will then be placed at the appropriate level of instruction in each subject area. Each student will have individual goals and will progress at their own pace through the instructional material. Kansas State Standards will be noted and recorded during instruction in order to facilitate transfer of student credits.
School starts at 8:30 am and ends at 3:00 pm, M-F with a break for lunch. Students are expected to work on their core curriculum during the school day. As needed, time will be set aside for group instruction, individual tutoring and life skills education. The schedule may vary from day to day, depending on the individual plan for each student.
Students are expected to treat themselves, equipment, teachers and other students with respect. In order to teach that principle, there are rules and guidelines; rewards and consequences. However, our overall guideline is “The Golden Rule”. Students are expected to treat others as they would like to be treated. Additionally, we want all students to have an equal opportunity to learn. Therefore, any behavior which prevents or disrupts the learning of others will not be allowed.
